- Dr BR Shetty buys world’s leading foreign exchange Travelex

India-born, Abu Dhabi-based billionaire entrepreneur Dr BR Shetty is buying Travelex, the world’s leading foreign exchange specialist, from private equity group Apax Partners (UK) in a £ 1 billion deal ($1.7 billion or Rs 9,800 crore), strengthening his play in the foreign currency exchange services market.

Shetty, 72, also the owner of UAE Exchange, Middle East’s biggest foreign currency provider, has partnered with Centurion - the investment vehicle owned by Abu Dhabi scion, for the deal.

Apax had planned a London listing of Travelex this June but Shetty tabled an offer which the private equity couldn’t refuse, which will see it making a handsome gain on its nine-year-old investment.

Shetty said - With an attractive growth strategy and an experienced management team, Travelex has demonstrated its ability to execute on strategy, to innovate and to deliver strong financial results.

Private equity firm Apax, which shelved plans to float Travelex in London this SUMMER after entering advanced sale talks with Dr Shetty, has sold its entire 50.2pc stake in the business.

As part of the deal, Travelex founder and chairman Lloyd Dorfman sold down his 35.4pc stake to retain a small holding.
He will also take up a new role as president.

Born in Karnataka in pre-independent India, Shetty immigrated to Abu Dhabi in 1972 with $8 in his wallet.

He started his career as a pharma salesman and today owns a healthcare and financial services empire that includes LSE-listed NMC Health, Neopharma and UAE Exchange.

Shetty’s forex remittance firm had recently applied for a banking licence in India but the central bank is yet to decide on its application, along with several others.

UAE Exchange operates in the Middle East under the name Money2Anywhere.

It was established in 1980 and has more than 700 offices in 32 countries and a customer base of 6 million.

Travelex, the foreign exchange group, has been sold in a £1bn deal to Bavaguthu Shetty, the billionaire owner of UAE Exchange, one of the Middle East’s biggest foreign currency providers.

Private equity firm Apax, which shelved plans to float Travelex in London this summer after entering advanced sale talks with Dr Shetty, has sold its entire 50.2pc stake in the business.
