Musica, culti e riti dei Greci d’Occidente

• Music, Cults and Rites of the Western Greeks

Notwithstanding local political divisions, Magna Graecia was a vigorous and multiform cultural entity marked by religious, ethical and artistic experiences that are significantly reflected in the musical history of the region.

The musical culture of Megale Hellas is still lacking a comprehensive and systematic study. The goal of this conference is to investigate the musical characteristics and phenomena of southern Italy and Sicily in the Greek era.

The topics of interest include music as an element of élite identity in Magna Graecia and Sicily, for instance, in its educational and political roles;
as a factor of strong cultural cohesion for the western Greeks, especially in local religious practices
(shared cults, domestic and funerary religion)

• The influence of philosophical trends; chorality, poetic activity, and literary production, including music theory; artistic representations and material remains — the concrete expressions of this musical culture; the impact of historical and political events, including Romanization; as well as points of contact with, and divergence from, theoretical and musical developments in Greece.

These topics will be addressed through contributions by
scholars working in various fields: philology and literary criticism, music theory, history of religion, art history, anthropology, ethnomusicology, archaeology and iconography.

Scholars interested in different these topics may send a proposal to the Organising Committee.

Papers should not exceed 20 minutes each; titles and abstracts (maximum 500 words) in Italian or English

Greek: Αρχαιο Ελληνικη μουσικη

Surviving music: 130 fragments

Performed at: theatres, festivals and at home

Instruments: Lyra, Kithara, barbitos, lute, syrinx and the hydraulis
