• • • Hamburg – Europe's GREEN City by the water

European Green Capital 2011: an entire city mobilised for sustainability Hamburg, 2010 (HHT) – Leafy parks, glittering lakes and tranquil waterways within a pulsating urban jungle: for years Hamburg has proved that living in a big city is no impediment to having natural beauty on your doorstep.

• • Not for nothing is it called the 'Green city by the water'.

Few destinations of a comparable size have as verdant a character as Hamburg. Green spaces, parks, woodland and nature reserves occupy nearly half the metropolitan area. Hamburg offers a high quality of life and stands at the forefront of environmental protection and climate change action.

• • The EU has acknowledged these credentials by naming
it the European Green Capital for 2011.

European Green Capital 2011: we involve the whole city Sustainable urban development and planning, green practices and eco-friendly lifestyles are the key themes for the coming year.

As the European Green Capital for 2011, Hamburg will show how a city of more than 1.7 million people can make the transition to the age of sustainability by working together.

2011 will be a year that gets the whole city involved, a year brimming with creativity and ideas that benefit the environment.

A dedicated infopoint provides information about the European Green Capital concept and there are themed eco-tours taking people behind the scenes at Hamburg's most exciting green projects.

The year culminates in an environmental film festival and an environmental youth summit.

But the campaign for sustainability is not just gathering pace in Hamburg.

It will also be promoted by a 'train of ideas' that will travel through Europe in 2011.

At every stop, the train will showcase concepts for the future that are emerging from
Hamburg, but it will also give people the chance to add their own ideas.

After collecting a multitude of proposals from all over Europe, the train will return to the
European Green Capital of Hamburg.

The International Building Exhibition in Hamburg: cities and climate change

On the Elbe river islands, visitors can see which ideas for the future are currently being worked on by the people of Hamburg. How and where will we be living, working, learning and getting around in 20 years time?

What are we doing about climate change and other pressing problems?

The International Building Exhibition endeavours to find answers to these questions.

Up to 2013, there will be a series of research and development projects focused on the role of cities in preventing climate change.
The spectrum ranges from energy-saving houses to visionary residential units for on-water living.

One of the exhibition's most eagerly anticipated projects is the transformation of Georgswerder hill into an 'energy mountain' with wind, solar and geothermal power stations.

This year, the IBA is also inviting people to look more carefully at construction sites.
All completed projects will be showcased at a final presentation in 2013.
