And 2017's rising star is...the port of Barcelona

The total movement of containers in Europe's 15 most important ports for that sector increased by 4.6% in 2017.

Among the 15 ports, Barcelona was the one that grew the most in 2017, moving 32.7% more boxes compared to 2016.

Barcelona's growth lifted it from 13th to 10th place in the ranking list.


The list leaders were

Rotterdam 13.7 million teu

Antwerp 10.5 million teu

Hamburg 8.8 million teu

Bremerhaven 5.5 million teu


Valencia
The Spanish port of Valencia saw its container traffic grow by 2.8%, taking the total to 4.83 million teu.

The result pushed the port into 5th place among Europe's main container ports.
Valencia overtook Algeciras (Spain), whose traffic fell by 8% due to strike action and the cyber-attack on Maersk.
The ports of Barcelona, Genoa, Le Havre, Rotterdam, Piraeus and Sines registered the highest growth rates of over 10%.

These US-bound services load cargoes from the major European ports of Southampton - London Gateway - Rotterdam - Bremerhaven - Hamburg - Antwerp - Le Havre - Valencia and Barcelona.
