/////////////// • Roger Hodgson – songwriter, singer and musician of Supertramp fame – was born in Portsmouth •

• The son of a lieutenant-commander in the navy, his first guitar was a parting gift from his father at the age of 12 when his parents divorced. He was brought up in Oxford and boarded at Stowe School.

• Hodgson co-founded the band in 1969 and was the writer of most of their hits which feature his distinctive high-pitched voice, including The Logical Song, Dreamer, Give a Little Bit and Breakfast in America. His lyrics often have a spiritual or philosophical theme.

• The band’s first success was the album Crime of the Century, released in 1974, followed by Crisis What Crisis? and Even in the Quietest Moments.

• in 1979 they released their most successful album, Breakfast in America, which sold more than 30 million copies.
