Yundi Li born in Chonqing, Central China (Oct 7, 1982 - age 33), and started to play music at the age of four - first the accordion and then, from the age of seven, the piano.

By the age of twelve he had won a regional contest, and was enabled to gain entry to Sichuan province's most prestigious music school.

A year later, when his teacher decided to move to Shenzhen in southern China, the Li family followed, so that their child could continue his studies uninterrupted.

When he was thirteen, Li won the Stravinsky Piano Competition in the USA.

He also won first prize in the American Gina Bachauer Intern Piano Competition, came third in the Dutch Liszt Piano Competition and 2nd in the Beijing Intern. Competition.
His real breakthrough came in Oct 2000, when he won first prize in the world-famous Warsaw Chopin Piano Competition - the youngest winner since the event was established in 1927.
Li was soloist of the Budapest Festival Orchestra's tour in Japan in 2001.
