A Festival to Honour a Great Citizen of Baku

OLGA Rostropovich remembered: “… the first festival was organized in the shortest possible time.
People responded instantly. Yura Bashmet agreed without hesitation, Giya Kancheli composed a piece in remembrance of my father, Natasha Gutman arrived.
Everything went off wonderfully well. Now the festival will be held annually”.

/// For four years the concerts of the Rostropovich Festival have been galas of great art.
Performances by the Giuseppe Verdi Symphony Orchestra from Milan, the New Russia and Moscow Soloists orchestras, the English Chamber Orchestra, the Israeli Philharmonic Orchestra and a whole cohort of musicians as eminent as Zubin Mehta, Eugene Kohn, Maxim Vengerov, Yuri Bashmet, Natalia Gutman, David Geringas, Pinchas Zukerman, Eliso Virsaladze, Christian Badea, Badri Maysuradze, as well as the young, but already noted Xavier Phillips, Boris Andrianov and Ray Chen, have all taken place in Baku.

/// Mstislav Leopoldovich Rostropovich (Baku, 27 marzo 1927 – Mosca, 27 aprile 2007), violoncellista e direttore d'orchestra russo naturalizzato Usa.
Chiamato affettuosamente Slava (che in russo significa Gloria), viene considerato il più grande violoncellista di tutti i tempi; si perfezionò alla scuola di Pablo Casals e venne da tutti accettato come suo degno successore. Dal 1943 al 1948 studiò al Conservatorio di Mosca, dove divenne professore di violoncello nel 1956, morto il 27 aprile 2007 a causa di un tumore al fegato un mese dopo aver compiuto 80 anni.

Lo strumento che suonava era lo Stradivari Duport del 1711, considerato uno dei migliori strumenti esistenti al mondo
