Taormina has drawn tourists for 200 years with its warm waters, sandy beaches and ruins from civilizations dating back to at least the 8th century BC.
Set on a steep, isolated hillside close to the tip of the Italian boot toe, it’s been the scene of battles and peaceful kingdoms under Greek, Roman, Islamic and Italian rule.
By the 19th century, its gently crumbling ruins and scenic setting were pulling in tourists from the rest of Europe, including Oscar Wilde, Nietzsche (who wrote his Thus Spoke Zarathustra here) and Richard Wagner.
In the 20th century, D. H. Lawrence and Truman Capote were among the many writers who came here for inspiration and relaxation.
Right now, it also serves as a comfortably distant viewpoint for Mt. Etna’s eruptions going off about 25 miles away.
